It is the lady in waiting's job to dress the bride, make sure hair and make-up are done, and to assist the bridesmaids if needed. Up until the time to get dressed, the lady in waiting will be keeping track of time, solving any bridesmaid dilemmas and answering the phone for any last minutes directions.
